Impatience in the Garden

As a new gardener I have no idea what is going on underneath the earth where our crops are growing and the curiosity is killing me. I know that the best thing I can do for my garden is to stay vigilant with weeding, watering and pest control but what I really want to do is see whether or not we are having any success.

Growing your own food is part knowing how and where your food comes from and part cultivating a deep sense of pride when pulling up root vegetables. So impatience took over and I started pulling up young plants to see if there was any food there. I learned my garden is working, and it's taking all the time it needs but in the meantime we got three baby beets, a tiny radish and two very, very new potatoes.
